Overview
This program is designed to provide selected high-achieving MAE undergraduate students with the opportunity to combine advanced undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework and accelerate graduate degree completion. Students will be able to earn a B.S.E. and M.S. degree in five (5) years by enrolling in up to nine (9) credit hours of approved graduate-level coursework taken as technical electives during the senior year. Those credits will apply toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The program is particularly suited for students with strong academic backgrounds who are motivated to pursue independent research. Participants will have an opportunity to work in a laboratory/research environment and engage in theoretical and/or experimental work with faculty and doctoral student mentors. Students will be able to showcase their work at both the undergraduate/graduate research symposia in the Fulton School and be eligible for travel grants to present their work at national conferences. Participants will also be expected to attend the weekly department seminar series.
Students are considered undergraduates until all B.S.E. degree requirements have been met. Students will not be counted as an undergraduate and graduate student simultaneously. Upon receipt of the B.S.E. degree, students must change their status from the joint B.S.E. – M.S. to the graduate M.S. degree program. They will then be eligible for graduate teaching and research assistantships and related health insurance and tuition waivers.
Admission Requirements
A minimum of two semesters of full-time enrollment in MAE is required. Applications are normally submitted with two (2) semesters remaining in the senior year.
A minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework applicable to an ASU B.S.E. degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.50/4.00 or better must be completed before beginning the joint degree program.

Course Selection
The student, together with the faculty advisor, selects up to 12 credit hours of 400- and 500-level courses to be taken prior to the B.S.E. graduation. Up to 9 credit hours of coursework may be credited toward the M.S. degree requirements. At least 6 of the 9 credit hours must be 500-level or above. There is a maximum of 6 credit hours at the 400-level allowed for graduate credit (3 credits in Mathematics and 3 credits in Engineering or Physical Sciences).
All courses must be taken at the ASU Main Campus.
