Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is an innovative discipline that draws upon various fundamental sciences. Mechanical engineering is the analysis, design, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical systems. It applies concepts in mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy for the design and analysis of land, sea and air vehicles, heating and cooling systems, machinery, appliances and more. Aerospace engineering is the design and development of airplanes, spacecraft and other flight vehicles as well as the design and development of relevant support systems, including their propulsion systems and methods for their control. According to U.S.News & World Report, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at ASU ranks 38th nationally among public institutions and 28th in aerospace engineering.
