Admission to Ph.D. without a M.S.

A highly qualified M.S. student may be permitted to bypass the M.S. and proceed directly to the Ph.D. program. To qualify, the student must have completed at least 9 hours of approved graduate work at ASU in good standing and must be nominated by his or her research advisor.

The Graduate Affairs Committee (GAC) will consider a request for a M.S. student to take the Ph.D. qualifying course work and pursue the above degree path after receiving the following:

  1. A letter of intent from the student.
  2. A letter of nomination from the student's research advisor.
  3. Other appropriate supporting materials.

Approval of the request requires a majority vote of the GAC and the approval of the Department Chair and the Graduate College. A student, who has qualified to bypass the M.S. degree, may return to the M.S. program upon his or her request.
