Incorporating Turbulence into Traffic Noise Models
by
Stephen Shaffer
This talk will explore recent methods on extending the parabolic equation model, an approximation to the Helmholtz equation, to incorporate basic effects of atmospheric turbulence in sound propagation. The role of the effective sound speed and techniques for modeling a turbulent field will be discussed. Along with a literature review of results from previous similar work. Emphasis is placed in application to modeling the sound field from a highway, treated as a line source above an impedance plane, in extension to our previous numerical work and field campaigns. Though there are many other applications for similar modeling methods.
