The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University has a faculty position open in the area of multiscale environmental fluid dynamics. The appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments and can be at the assistant, associate or full professor rank, beginning August 2008. An earned doctorate in engineering or related fields is required.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized and externally funded research program delving into a variety of environmental (oceanic and/or atmospheric) flow scales and their interactions using state-of-the-art experimental and/or modeling approaches, including effective use of sensor and satellite data platforms. Experience with research on synoptic and climatic scales is desired. Other duties include graduate and undergraduate teaching and advisement, and service activities.
The open faculty position is aligned with priorities in the Department as well as the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering that leverage investments by the University promoting interdisciplinary teaching and research, including the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Center (http://www.fulton.asu.edu/~pefdhome), Global Institute of Sustainability (http://sustainability.asu.edu/gios), High Performance Computing Initiative (http://hpc.asu.edu), and School of Earth and Space Exploration (http://sese.asu.edu).
Required qualifications include earned doctorate in engineering or relevant science, demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank. The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and have the ability to collaborate effectively with other faculty members on multi-disciplinary research initiatives. Senior candidates must have a distinguished record of achievement as evidenced by leadership in their field of expertise, publications, professional recognition and extramural funding. Desired qualifications include ability to collaborate on multidisciplinary research initiatives and experience with research on large scale flows. Review of applications will begin November 30, 2007 and will continue until the search is closed. Candidates must send via email to mae@asu.edu a cover letter, curriculum vitae, brief statement of research and teaching interests, and contact information (name, address and telephone number) for three professional references.
