Refinery Exhaust Transport and Ground Level Fumigation: An Analysis of August 29, 2006

During winter 2006, field observations were carried out to study the impact of emissions from the Alcoa aluminum refinery in Wagerup, Australia. The area was instrumented to capture atmospheric condition as well as the presence of refinery emissions downstream. The multi-month study provided multiple opportunities to study emission transport during stable conditions. August 29, 2006 was one particular day in which refinery emissions were found to move downwind at low levels for a significant distance. An overview of the morning transport of emissions on August 29 will be given. Evidence will be presented that suggests these emissions reached ground levels during certain periods. Relevant meteorology will also be presented.
